Dresser (An instance of object)
(2016)
Performance and installation at Artel: Identity of Space residency at TIFA Working Studios in Pune, India.
Performance by Nooshin Rostami
Video, sound and installation by Utsa Hazarika
This installation uses mirrors to reflect the video projection, which fills the room with fragments of the original video, and breaks the rectangular ‘frame’ through which video is traditionally viewed. Nooshin Rostami’s performance with the dresser deconstructs the physical object, echoing the ways in which mirrors act on the projected video.
This work dismantles object-oriented ways of seeing and thinking by looking at objects as things that ‘happen’, rather than as things that ‘are’. Breaking the unity of form, of both object and video, allows us to look at them as instances or occurrences of their scattered parts. Nooshin’s performance creates an event out of the act of beholding the dresser, further subverting the idea of its existence as static and stable.
